The No. 6 seed New York Jets take on their archrival from the AFC East, the No. 1 seed New England Patriots in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs this upcoming Sunday afternoon. Kickoff from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough is set for 4:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.

The big question for New York in this game is what Jets team will show up this time around. Early in the season it pounded New England 28-14 as a three-point home underdog with the total going ‘over’ the 39 ½-point line. Jets QB Mark Sanchez had a career day; completing 21-of-30 attempts for 220 yards and three touchdowns.

The second time around in Week 13 , New York was humiliated by a score of 45-3 in front of a nationally televised audience on Monday night. It came in as a four-point road underdog and the total went ‘over’ the 44 ½-point line. Sanchez only managed to complete 51.5 percent of his passes for 164 yards and was picked-off three times. The Jets do not need Sanchez to play great to win this game. Last week, in their 17-16 win over Indianapolis as a one-point road underdog, he completed 18-of -31 attempts for 189 yards and no touchdowns, but for the most part took care of the ball. New York’s only chance to win on Sunday is to effectively run the ball and keep moving the chains to keep Tom Brady and the Patriots’ offense on the sideline for as much of the game as possible.

New England has gotten progressively better as the season wore on. It finished the season with a league-best 14-2 record, including eight straight victories down the stretch. During this run the Patriots outscored their opponents by a combined score of 299-125.

Brady all but locked-up this season’s MVP award with a 65.9 completion percentage for 3,900 yards and 36 touchdowns, while only throwing just four interceptions. He finished the season with a passer rating of 111.o but he had a ridiculous 130.6 rating over his last six games.

What makes this team even scarier, is its defense is also playing at a high level after getting off to a shaky start. It finished the regular season ranked 25th overall, but was ranked 11th against the run and eighth in points allowed. The Patriots only gave up a total of 47 points combined in their last five games which works out to be an average of just 9.4 points per game.

Trends:

New York is 3-3 ATS in its last six road games and 5-5 ATS in its last five games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of its last six games.
New England is 3-2 ATS in its last five games at home and 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in nine of its last 10 games.
Head-to-head, the Patriots have won six out of the last nine games SU and are 5-4 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of the last nine meetings.

The Jets will be able to keep this game much closer than the last time these two teams met but not less than 10 points. The Patriots are playing at far too high of a level to allow New York to hang around late in this game.

The Pick: New England -9
